The general store was a community center where people would gather to share information, stock up on supplies, and get to know their neighbors. In the Little House on the Prairie television series, Oleson’s Mercantile in Walnut Grove sold a variety of goods that included staples and small luxuries such as fabrics, lanterns, children’s toys and candy.
