Laura Ingalls Wilder Documentary

by Website Editors | Dec 25, 2014

Little House on the Prairie: The Legacy of Laura Ingalls Wilder is a one-hour documentary that goes beyond the famed Little House book series to the behind-the-scenes, true life story of one of America’s most iconic authors, Laura Ingalls Wilder.

Laura Ingalls Wilder Documentary

Wilder’s personal story as a writer, wife and mother is a compelling narrative that has never been shown… until now. Her adventures come to life through interviews with historians, passages from the Little House books, archival photography, paintings from famous frontier artists, dramatic reenactments, a beautiful original score, and original artwork.

Step further into Laura’s world with 35 minutes of bonus features exploring such topics as Native Americans and African Americans on the prairie, the Morgan Horse, and the American artist Harvey Dunn. Finally, travel behind the scenes with director Dean Butler and illustrator Cheryl Harness to experience the making of Little House on the Prairie: The Legacy of Laura Ingalls Wilder.

The documentary and bonus features were narrated, directed, and co-produced by Dean Butler who is well-known for his memorable portrayal of Almanzo Wilder on the “Little House on the Prairie” television series from 1979 to 1983. In addition to Little House on the Prairie: The Legacy of Laura Ingalls Wilder, Dean produced, directed and narrated another wonderful documentary called Almanzo Wilder: Life Before Laura.

  9. I have first heard about the Little House on the Prairie tv show from my parents. I remember they said that how much they had enjoyed it. I’ve purchased the entire book series translated to the Sinhala language as we could not find the English version back then. I have immensely enjoyed reading them. It made me travel back in time. Laura’s life story teaches us about love, loyalty, kindness, sacrifice, patience, hard work, determination, and the list is endless.

I still read them and I am so glad that there is a website 🙂

The Little House on the Prairie book series and the tv show is relevant at all times.

  11. I love this show as well. I watched it as a small kid and I watch it today. I have seen it many many times throughout the years. I wished I lived back in those days. I know it was a hard life, but yet it was a strong feeling of home and safety. I loved all the episodes. I hope this show remains on reruns until the end of time. It will always be relevant.

  13. I have recently begun to re-watch the series on Cozi. It is one of the most remarkable shows ever made. It depicts EVERYTHING humans face, even today. The life was hard, yet family and community were so important. I am always ALWAYS uplifted by the stories! The show integrates everything that is lacking today: faith in God, family, hard work, love, forgiveness. The show also covers many issues that are present today: death, disease, racism, crime, infidelity, hatred, women’s rights, bullying. The list goes on. Yet the show always deals with its subject matter with respect and optimism. Those are things we so badly need right now. It amazes me how relevant this wonderful show remains. I am going to make sure my grandchildren watch the show when they are old enough. It is well worth watching today. We have much to learn from it. Although it ran 40 years ago or so, it is still so relevant today. Maybe even more so.

  14. This is one of my all time favorites. I love the wholesome, simple life they lead and all the importance they put on love and family. It always uplifts my spirit and makes me happy. I watched this series and then went to the library and read all the books as an adult. I love historical stories and that it was a real story. Family life back then was a collaborative effort that kept the family working close together for their survival. There were little outside distractions so the family stayed together as a unit until the children married. I always wish I lived during simpler times in such a cohesive and close family unit. I just watched the series again on Amazon Prime…it was a wonderful distraction during these crazy times of pandemic, tweets and social unrest.

      • The DVDs can be purchased on Amazon or eBay. We just purchased them. We then realized they are on Amazon Prime Video. But the DVDs don’t have commercials. We enjoy the wholesome values of the people living in these times.
